The new options are meant to appeal to a customer base that's either vegan or chooses not to consume dairy products, two groups that have been very vocal with Ben & Jerry's about their preferences, says spokeswoman Lindsay Bumps.
"We've definitely had a large demand from our consumers to have a non-dairy offering," she says. The announcement comes after a change.org petition calling on Ben & Jerry's to create non-dairy ice creams garnered more than 28,400 supporters last year. The company has been testing vegan versions of its famous pints for nearly three years.
Of the 3.4% of U.S. adults who are vegetarian, nearly 15% identify as vegan, according to a poll conducted by The Vegetarian Resource Group last year. Still, vegan products have grown in popularity because they appeal to more than just those who consider themselves vegan, says Charles Stahler, co-director of the group. Soy milk and almond milk, for example, have taken over more refrigerator space in grocery stores because they also cater to those that are lactose intolerant or don't eat dairy due to allergies, health reasons, religious reasons or environmental reasons, he says.
Unfortunately for those of us in the UK we had to watch from afar whilst our American friends enjoyed their new range of almond-milk based vegan ice-creams. So we were over the moon when the confirmed that they were rolling the new flavours out across stores in the UK.

The non-dairy dessert includes chocolate ice cream with marshmallow, caramel swirls, and fudge fish, just like the original. Certified vegan, halal, and gluten-free, the plant-based ice cream combines an almond milk base with coconut oil and soy protein.
Alright, Foodbeast fam. I know that we've posted a lot of the surprise releases of vegan ice creams that Ben & Jerry's have dropped on us, and you've been waiting to hear back for official confirmation of these bad boys.
Turns out that we just don't have the three vegan ice cream flavors that we've covered previously to reveal to y'all. But actually, Ben & Jerry's has released SIX total new ice cream flavors, all scheduled to be in stores starting in mid-February (basically, right now).
A pretty straightforward vegan ice cream; this one comes with swirls of salted caramel and chunks of almond brittle embedded throughout the ice cream. A cool twist on the salted caramel trend, and a nice touch for vegan nutty ice cream lovers.
New for 2019 is a vegan version of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Chunks, certified by Vegan Action. The vegan dough chunks are the same ones found in one of the newest Non-Dairy offerings, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert, which just launched in February. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough has been one of the most requested flavors by fans to join the Non-Dairy line up.
Take Chocolate Fudge Brownie, for example. Per serving, the vegan version has 200 calories, 11 grams of fat, 23 grams of carbs, and 16 grams of sugar. Its dairy version, on the other hand, contains 260 calories, 12 grams of fat, 34 grams of carbs, and 27 grams of sugar.
But experts also agree that their overall calorie and fat contents don't exactly make them a health food. "This new Ben & Jerry's ice cream line is great for vegans with strong ethical beliefs but for non-vegans who are just trying to watch their calorie, fat, and sugar intake you won't find much luck here" says certified dietitian-nutritionist Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CEO of NY Nutrition Group. Why? Most of the desserts contain more than 250 calories and 25 grams of sugar for a tiny serving, she notes, which won't exactly do wonders for waistline.
So if you're going to have ice cream and want to save a little on calories, reaching for the vegan version might not be the worst thing, says Ansel. "An ice cream that uses almond milk instead of cream, like the Ben & Jerry's new nondairy ice creams, can be a slightly better bet," she says. "But you really need to read the labels to know for sure."
If you have ice cream infrequently, Cording recommends reaching for whatever will leave you feeling the most satisfied. But if you're a regular ice cream-eater, she says it's worth adding the vegan version into your rotation once in a while to save a little on fat and calories. However, she points out, "200 calories in a vegan dessert is still more than 150 calories in a non-vegan ice cream from another company."
Guys, this vegan peanut butter cookie dough ice cream is SO SIMPLE! No heating, cooking, thickening required, passing through sieves. Just blend the ingredients until completely smooth, chill and churn.
Transfer your cashew ice cream base to a shallow container, cover in plastic wrap, and place in the refrigerator to let it chill all the way through. You can chill the ice cream base overnight if you prefer. While your ice cream base is chilling, make your vegan cookie dough.
Take a look in any supermarket ice cream freezer section and you may see a mystery. There are big containers of the typical ice cream brands: Breyers, Turkey Hill, and Edy's. And there are specialty brands that make gelato, low-fat and vegan ice creams. And then there are the fancy pints: which is mostly Ben & Jerry's and Häagen-Dazs.
How do you get that creamy, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink (and-then-a-core-of-cookie-dough) flavor without the dairy? The frozen desserts use almond milk instead of regular milk (so it's great for lactose intolerant people too) and vegan brownies from Greystone Bakery in Yonkers, New York.
Whether achieved through people power or good ol' profit-seeking, the move marks a victory for vegans: now they too can know the joy of entire weekends on the couch with nothing but a good Netflix series and a little blue tub of obscene deliciousness.
The Vermont ice cream maker has created four flavors using a certified vegan almond milk base. Available are the classic Chunky Monkey and Chocolate Fudge Brownie flavors, plus a couple of new ones: Coffee Caramel Fudge and P.B. and Cookies.
